With a new and hopeful year ahead of us, homeowners are now taking the plunge and taking on the task of home remodeling. Our industry has seen a flurry of activity since the later months of 2020 and the Design and Construction industry has been busy. Here are some of the trends we’ve been seeing for 2021 with many spilling over to 2022 and beyond.
In the kitchen, the most requested cabinet door style has been the flat-panel (aka slab) doors. These doors are easy to clean, aesthetic pleasing to the eye, and will remain relevant for years to come. Although it has been associated with a more modern style, more homeowners are embracing flat-panel cabinetry (it’s been around in Europe for decades). Textured melamine and wood veneer doors are the most requested, in natural and soothing color tones. Mixing materials and colors, wood grains at main cabinets and solid colors at upper cabinets, are going to continue in 2021 and 2022 with an emphasis on pops of color at focal points like the island or floating shelves.
The next requested wish list for the kitchen is storage. Maximizing storage options like pull-out corner units, roll-out drawers at the pantry, spice and trash pullouts, and specialized requests to make life easier for homeowners; pull-down upper cabinets, lift up hardware for upper cabinets, tip-on hardware for doors (won’t need cabinet pulls/knobs), etc.
Quartz is still the most requested material for kitchens, although solid surface is still making an appearance for bath countertops and shower walls. Quartz is easy to clean, durable and available in so many colors. More manufacturers are offering a variety of finishes besides the standard polished finish (honed and brushed). Expect to see more lighter colors for the countertops to compliment the wood grains in the cabinetry.
